The Scratching Post: When Life Gives You Lemons - Our Unexpected Detour to Put-In-Bay

Our much-anticipated vacation to Venice Beach, Florida, was all set. Bags were packed, excitement was in the air, and we were ready to bask in the sun and sandy shores. However, as fate would have it, Hurricane Debbie had other plans. After spending about four hours at Pittsburgh International Airport, our flight with Allegiant Airlines was canceled. The disappointment was palpable, especially after the buildup of excitement and anticipation.

While the family was greatly disappointed, we had to look at the bright side. Unlike many others who were stranded at the airport, we were fortunate enough to be in our hometown. This perspective helped us regroup and think about our next steps. Instead of flying to Sarasota, we brainstormed for Plan B and decided on a three-hour drive to Put-In-Bay on South Bass Island in Ohio's Great Lake Erie.

One door closes, and another opens. We embraced the change in plans with a positive outlook. While we wouldn't have the sandy beaches of Florida, we were determined to make the best of our new destination. Put-In-Bay, with its own unique charm, beckoned us for a new adventure.

All things considered, we are lucky.

We are not in the path of the hurricane, and our best thoughts go out to those who have to deal with property damage and personal safety concerns. There's a lot more at stake than losing a good time on the beach. Our hearts go out to the people of Florida as they face the challenges brought by Hurricane Debbie.

So, Florida, I'll be back. Meanwhile, Put-In-Bay beckons with new adventures and memories waiting to be made. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best experiences come from unexpected detours.
