Cool Filmz: A Now Streaming on Netflix Review of Dark Winds (Season One)

My wife and I enjoy finding a great streaming show that caters to both our tastes—action for me and history and romance for her. The thriller genre often serves as our common ground, and for this, "Dark Winds" fits the bill perfectly. We started watching Dark Winds about two weeks ago and just recently finished he first season. Can't wait for the second.

From the vast, mysterious landscapes of the Navajo Nation to the intricate, suspense-filled plots, "Dark Winds" delivers a captivating blend of culture, mystery, and drama. If you're a fan of TV thrillers that keep you perched on the edge of your seat, Netflix’s latest series "Dark Winds" should be your next binge-watch.

Dark Winds: A Journey into 1970s Navajo Nation

"Dark Winds" unfolds in the 1970s, transporting viewers to the heart of the Navajo Nation. The series revolves around two Navajo police officers, Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee, who find themselves entangled in a series of interconnected crimes. These are not just any crimes; they are deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual fabric of the Native American community, adding layers of intrigue and depth.

The plot thickens as Leaphorn and Chee uncover secrets that have long been buried, leading to a thrilling cat-and-mouse game with the perpetrators. The suspense is palpable, and with each episode, the stakes get higher, drawing viewers deeper into the narrative.

Zahn McClarnon

Joe Leaphorn, portrayed by Zahn McClarnon, is a seasoned Navajo police officer with a keen eye for details. McClarnon's performance is nothing short of stellar. His portrayal of Leaphorn is nuanced, bringing a perfect blend of toughness and vulnerability to the character.

For my money, there's something distinctly reminiscent of Robert Duvall about McClarnon's portrayal of Joe Leaphorn. McClarnon's demeanor and presence evoke the charm and depth of Duvall's character, August McCray in "Lonesome Dove," a timeless story that performance that captured the essence of rugged individuality and and wild west loyalty. All those elements are present in McClarnon's Joe Leaphorn.

Much like Duvall's McCray, Joe Leaphorn carries an air of experience and wisdom that comes with age, making him not just relatable but also genuinely intriguing. McClarnon's Leaphorn embodies the essence of a seasoned individual—older, yet effortlessly cool and laid-back, with a personality that draws people in and makes them feel at ease.

Kiowa Gordon

Kiowa Gordon steps into the shoes of Jim Chee, a younger officer with a strong sense of justice and a deep connection to his heritage. Gordon's chemistry with McClarnon is palpable, creating a dynamic duo that drives the narrative forward with compelling energy. His portrayal of Chee brings a refreshing balance to the show, with his youthful vigor and determination providing a perfect counterpoint to Leaphorn's seasoned experience.

Chee is an exciting character, driven by his unwavering moral compass and unyielding dedication to protecting his community. He often finds himself at odds with authority figures who don't share his values, creating tension and conflict that adds depth to the story.

Jessica Matten

Jessica Matten portrays Bernadette Manuelito, a Navajo tribal police sergeant known for her keen intellect and close collaboration with Leaphorn. Matten brings depth to her character, depicting a strong, confident woman who is not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for what she believes in.

Manuelito is a crucial part of the dynamic duo with Leaphorn. She adds an additional layer of complexity to the narrative, showcasing how women are breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated roles. Her presence serves as a reminder that gender should never limit one's capabilities or potential.

In season one, she harbors a skeptical view of Jim Chee, but it’s evident from their first meeting that a love connection is on the horizon. She is beautiful, and Kiowa Gordon's portrayal of Jim Chee evokes a Johnny Depp-like charm reminiscent of Depp's earlier appeal.

Dark Winds: Supporting Cast

The supporting cast is equally impressive, featuring accomplished actors who bring authenticity and depth to their roles. Each character, no matter how minor, contributes to the rich tapestry that is "Dark Winds."

Noah Emmerich portrays Leland Whitover, a fatigued FBI agent facing the decline of his career, who serves as Chee's handler. He plays a great bad guy, but the character is not one-dimensional; we get glimpses of his inner conflict and moral struggles. Emmerich's performance adds layers to the narrative.

Deanna Allison portrays Emma Leaphorn, the devoted wife of Leaphorn and a compassionate nurse who balances her professional responsibilities with supporting her husband through challenging times. The chemistry with McClarnon is heartwarming, showcasing a loving and supportive relationship at the core of the show.

Other notable characters include George Eads as Deputy Sheriff Tommy Colter, who brings a charming yet troubled energy to his character, and Christian Kane as Billy Vines, a rancher with ties to the criminal activities that Leaphorn and Manuelito are investigating. Every actor delivers exceptional performances, making each scene captivating and propelling the story forward.

Rainn Wilson plays Dan "Devoted Dan" DeMarco, a degenerate missionary and used-car dealer whose questionable morals are overshadowed by his fervent faith, which he exploits to attract followers to his cause. I still always remember Wilson as Dwight Schrute on The Office, but he is enjoyable in any role where a little weirdness is in order and he is great in Dark Winds.

Elva Guerra takes on the role of Sally Growing Thunder, a pregnant teenager facing adversity, who finds refuge with the Leaphorns, creating a bond that highlights themes of family and support in turbulent times.

Dark Winds: Immersive Native American Backdrop

One of the most striking features of "Dark Winds" is its authentic portrayal of Navajo settings. The series was filmed on location in the Navajo Nation, providing a genuine glimpse into the landscapes and communities of this vibrant culture.

"Dark Winds" goes beyond mere scenery; it dives deep into the heart of Native American culture. From traditional ceremonies to everyday life, the series paints a vivid picture of Navajo traditions and beliefs.

The blending of mystery with cultural elements is what makes "Dark Winds" truly unique. The series doesn't just use the Navajo backdrop as a setting—it makes it an integral part of the story. This fusion of mystery and culture creates a rich, immersive experience that leaves a lasting impact.

Dark Winds Season One: The Elements of A Great Show

Throughout its first season, "Dark Winds" expertly weaves multiple story arcs that keep viewers guessing.

From ancient prophecies to modern-day crimes, each arc is meticulously crafted to build tension and intrigue. One of the standout arcs involves a string of mysterious murders that bear eerie similarities to Navajo legends. This crossover of myth and reality adds a supernatural element to the series, making it even more engaging.

Here is what I liked the most:

  1. The casting of "Dark Winds" is spot-on. Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon lead the charge with their powerful performances, while the supporting cast adds layers of credibility and emotion.
  2. The acting in "Dark Winds" is commendable. Each actor delivers a performance that is both believable and compelling, drawing viewers into the world of the Navajo Nation.
  3. The plot is tightly woven, with twists and turns that keep viewers engaged from start to finish. The integration of Navajo culture and mythology adds a unique dimension that sets "Dark Winds" apart from other thrillers.

Dark Winds Season One Cool Filmz Rating: King

For Dark Winds Season One, I deal it a solid King. "Dark Winds" is a must-watch for anyone who enjoys a good mystery, appreciates strong character development, and is fascinated by cultural narratives. The series masterfully combines a gripping plot with deep cultural insights, making it a standout addition to Netflix's lineup.

is a King saying a whole lot?

Yes, a King is a big deal to me. I reserve an Ace for shows like Breaking Bad, Sopranos, shows that capture the fascination of a decade and change the landscape of what streaming can do. Dark Winds is one level below that, but who knows, I only watched the first season. I am eager to see where the second season will take me.

If you're ready for a thrilling ride through the Navajo Nation, filled with suspense, drama, and cultural richness, "Dark Winds" is waiting for you. Stream it now on Netflix and join Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee on their quest for justice.  On that note, I'll catch you next week on Cool Filmz trail. Happy Streaming.

For those interested in exploring further (and as a thriller novelist myself) I'd be remiss in not telling you to consider reading the original novels by Tony Hillerman, on which "Dark Winds" is based.
